Edward Everett speaks at the dedication of the cemetery in Gettysburg, Pennsylvania.

After Everett finishes his two-hour oration, President Lincoln delivers what come to be known as the Gettysburg Address. The next day, Everett writes Lincoln, “I should be glad, if I could flatter myself, that I came as near to the central idea of the occasion in two hours, as you did in two minutes.”
